From President

Greetings!

This is my first article as your new president. I am honored to have been entrusted with the job again.

I wonder how many of you know who is on your board of directors. These are volunteers who were voted in last summer by you, the members. I hope you will all feel free to bring your ideas, questions and concerns to your staff, Ernie and Chris, or your board. We are here to serve you.

I think it might be interesting for you to learn a little something about who makes up the board and something interesting about them.

RJ Patel owns the Prestigious Cleaning Team near Atlanta. He really likes football ("futbol, the REAL football") in other words soccer. He is your vice president.

Jeff Lange owns McMaids in Chicago. In his spare time, he flies planes. Jeff is our treasurer.

Dee Strickland owns A Zing Zap Cleaning Service in Mineola, FL. She is single-handedly responsible for procuring the speaking services of Lee Cockrell at our last Orlando convention of which she was chair.

Brenda Stankus owns Classic Touch Cleaning in Richmond, VA. She is your past president. Brenda is an oil painter as well as a teacher of painting.

Nancy Holekamp owns Maid in Texas in San Antonio. She also owns an antique and gift shop.

Enid Tate-Shepherd owns Enid's Cleaning Service in Indiana. She also sells home-made soap and bath products which she concocts herself.

Dawn Raffler owns Clarkston Cleaning in Clarkston, Michigan. She has maybe the cutest granddaughter EVER!

Matt Ricketts owns Better Life Maids in St. Louis. In his previous life he was an airline pilot.

Stacie McMillan owns Clean and Simple Cleaning in Lynwood, WA. She also owns a ski school and just completed a full ironman triathlon last summer!

Raymond Mace owns Royal Maids near Charleston, SC. He and his wife are actually a Lord and Lady of the British Empire.

Samantha Snider owns ProCare Cleaning and Building Maintenance in Vancouver, WA. In her previous life she owned a child care company.

Wells Ye owns Fresh Tech Maids in Chicago. In his spare time he does Tai chi.

I own Custom Maid in Virginia Beach, VA. I am retired and my step daughter runs the business for me. (jealous?) In my spare time I knit afghans which I sell at craft shows in the fall. My real hobby is ARCSI, which I love!

Ernie Hartong is your Executive Director. His passion is golf and his granddaughter, Sani.

Chris Zimmer is your Associate Executive Director. She's a big fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes and does baking in her spare time.

Now that you know your board a little better, I hope you'll keep in touch with us. Email us, call us, let us know what is on your mind.

My email is alisonpalmer@cox.net and my phone is 757-499-0776. I am always available to members. Our home office is in Columbus, Ohio and you can email Ernie and Chris at ernie@arcsi.org and chris@arcsi.org or call them at 614-547-0887.

Industry and Business News
State Minimum Wage Increases Affects Millions
On January 1, 13 states raised their minimum wage requirements by varying degrees and on July 1, California will raise theirs by $1.

As a result, the Economic Policy Institute estimates about 4.6 million workers will see their wages increased, 2.6 million of whom are directly affected as the new minimum wage exceeds their current hourly pay. The other 2 million already make slightly more than the new minimum wage but will benefit from the ripple effect.

The ripple effect occurs when employers raise wages for almost all, if not all, employees across the board when they raise the rate of minimum wage workers.

It could well be the entire country that sees an increase soon. Congressional Democrats and President Obama are pushing to raise the federal minimum wage from $7.25 an hour to $10.10 by 2015.

Notice Posting Rule Struck Down

The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has decided not to seek Supreme Court review of two U.S. Court of Appeals decisions invalidating the NLRB's Notice Posting Rule, which would have required most private sector employers to post a notice of employee rights in the workplace.

The NRLB was quick to point out that employers may still voluntarily post the notice of employees' rights, but that doing so is not a requirement.

The Benefits of Providing Online Estimates
by Mark Lane, President, Compass Wave
If you own a cleaning business you likely do all of your estimates by visiting the home. This concept seems normal, and the standard for not only cleaning businesses but other types of businesses that perform home services as well. However the concept of homeowners waiting for someone to come to their home to receive an estimate is changing.

Think of Blockbuster Video. Years ago everyone who wanted to watch a movie would make a trip to the local movie box store to pick out a movie. With advancements in technology, and the need for wanting movies on demand this dynamic has drastically changed. Anyone who is interested in a movie would rather purchase or rent the movie right from the comfort of their own home, instead of venturing out into a box store to pick one out.

This is also true with wanting quotes and prices for other items as well. Potential Customers want the instant satisfaction of know what something costs, and the ability to schedule that repair, service, or purchase that item right away. Think of any online shopping website, or stores that offer purchases online.

So you may ask, Why should you be doing Online Estimates? The answer is simple, a Potential Customer wants to know how much you would charge to clean their home before they even reach out to you in the first place. Potential Customersare going to shop around, and why shouldn't they? This is a competitive period of time where businesses compete for potential customers. Potential Customersalso want the instant satisfaction of know what different companies are going to charge for a home cleaning.

2014 Mileage Rates Listed
The Internal Revenue Service has issued the 2014 optional standard mileage rates used to calculate the deductible costs of operating an automobile for business, charitable, medical or moving purposes.

Beginning on Jan. 1, 2014, the standard mileage rates for the use of a car (also vans, pickups or panel trucks) are:

56 cents per mile for business miles driven
23.5 cents per mile driven for medical or moving purposes
14 cents per mile driven in service of charitable organizations

The business, medical, and moving expense rates decrease one-half cent from the 2013 rates.

The standard mileage rate for business is based on an annual study of the fixed and variable costs of operating an automobile. The rate for medical and moving purposes is based on the variable costs.

Taxpayers always have the option of calculating the actual costs of using their vehicle rather than using the standard mileage rates.

ARCSI Changes Dues Structure in 2014
ARCSI staff finished out 2013 sending letters to all members about the Board-approved dues structure change that took place on January 1, 2014. After six years of ARCSI dues remaining the same, the ARCSI Board approved a dues increase for 2014. The Board also approved a dues structure change, eliminating the silver membership level. Former Silver members have the choice to downgrade to a Basic Membership or upgrade to the Executive Membership level. The Bronze membership is now the Basic Membership and the Gold level membership is now the Executive Membership.

The dues increase take the Basic membership to $375/year or $33 per month and adds increased value to the Executive level membership; like discounts to the Executive Leadership Conference and the ARCSI Summer Success Tour events.

For questions about the dues structure change or Basic level dues increase, please contact the ARCSI office at 614-547-0887 or ernie@arcsi.org.We thank all of our members for their continuing support as ARCSI continues to grow and expand our services to better meet the needs of members.
