From the President...

The past eights week have been very busy for ARCSI. We are experiencing explosive membership growth. Companies and business owners world wide are realizing we are the number one source for building and growing a success residential cleaning business.

There are some new dynamic personal development programs in the works that we will be launching in the coming months. These premium programs are being developed to help aid entrepreneurs in their day to day business challenges. These programs will allow members to expand their business knowledge and leadership skills.

The excitement is in the air and the anticipation is building for the 2011 ARCSI Convention: IN IT TO WIN IT! This is going to be a blockbuster event you will not want to miss. There are only 74 days left!

I booked my flight last week and took advantage of the low fairs Southwest Airlines was advertising. Las Vegas is definitely one of my favorite places to go, so much to see and so much to do. There is no place like Vegas! All the major players and big names will be there.

The convention committee has been working hard and relentlessly to bring you a first rate event. There will be some old faces and some new faces bringing you some outstanding sessions. I can't believe the speakers we have lined up!

ARCSI Book Club to Meet August 11

The July/August book selection is "Execution: The Discipline of Getting Things Done" by Larry Bossidy and Ram Charan.
This tome addresses dysfunctional behaviors within your company and suggests concrete ways to address those behaviors, execute and move forward.

McMaid's Lange Appointed to ARCSI Board

At the July 27 ARCSI Board meeting, Jeff Lange was appointed as the newest member of the Board of Directors. Lange replaces Amanda Collucci (of Clean 4 Me of Markham, ON, Canada) who resigned from the Board effective July 31, 2011 for personal reasons. His appointment will run through 2012, when he will be eligible for election.

 Lange is Vice President of McMaid Home Services in Rolling Meadows, IL. He has been in the residential cleaning industry in one form or another for 29 year, starting on a cleaning crew when his mother Kaye bought her first McMaid location. Ten years later, Jeff purchased an additional location. He and Kaye have been working together in the same office for the past 14 years.

Lange has been a member of ARCSI for over three years and is currently serving as the 2011 ARCSI Convention Co-Chair. He has also agreed to serve as Chair of the 2012 ARCSI Cleaning Convention in Chicago.
Jeff resides in Rolling Meadows, IL with his wife and two young sons.

Also at the July 27 Board meeting, Lanette Richmond was appointed as ARCSI Treasurer, filling the post vacated by Kathy Gage effective July 31 for personal reasons.

Richmond has owned Life Maid Easy in Phoenix for almost 15 years and has been an ARCSI member since 2004. She currently serves as an Ambassador and Chair of both the 2011 ARCSI Convention and the Teleconference Committee. Richmond has been a member of the ARCSI Board since 2009.

We Want to Learn About YOU!

There are so many new twists to the 2011 ARCSI Convention! One of the most exciting is the addition of an ARCSI member's only lounge where you can take a break from the Convention, vote for the ARCSI Image Awards, browse the silent auction items and network with other ARCSI member.

The Tech Corner: Deodorizers

The purpose of this column is to help you clean better and stay out of trouble. Many of the diverse and expensive surfaces we are asked to clean require specialized remedies -- and the internet and other possible resources are often full of bad advice that can negatively affect your bottom line. Our questions address some of these issues – our answers could save you thousands.

Q: I’m confused about different types of deodorizers. Don’t they all work the same way?

A: In a word – ‘No’. There are several different approaches to deodorization. The most common type and the original is a masking agent. This type is basically a perfume used to mask unpleasant odors. The trouble is that sometimes the perfumes are worse than the odors they are intended to mask, especially if over-used. These may also cause allergic reactions.

Another approach is called "pairing agents”. These compounds bond with the odor molecule to create either a new, more pleasant odor or no odor at all. These usually are fragrances such as orange, lemon, mint, etc. Each fragrance pairs best with a specific odor. Your distributor can give you guidance on which product would be best for each situation.

Absorption is another common way to treat odors. In this method, an absorbent material catches and holds odor molecules. These products sometimes also contain a masking agent. A simple example of this type of approach is the open box of baking soda left in the refrigerator.

Ozone has been used for years to combat smoke odors after fires. It works by oxidizing or burning odors and can be very effective at getting at odors that have penetrated fabrics and permeable materials. It can also assist by entering air ducts and other inaccessible places in the building. Ozone is highly corrosive and must be used with care. It can damage some materials and should never be used while there are people, pets or plants in the building. The low-level ozone generators sold at retail may well do more to deaden the occupant’s sense of smell (one of ozone’s characteristics) than to actually destroy odors.

A related but generally safe approach is the use of hydrogen peroxide to oxidize the odor-emitting material. This can be very effective against pet odors. Most of the products in this group (such as OSR from Pro Choice or Urine Rescue from ProChem contain between 7 to 12 percent hydrogen peroxide. These can also help bleach out pet stains on carpets or other fabrics, but check for color-fastness of the fabrics.

A common approach to pet odor problems is a class of compounds known as enzyme digesters. These break down or digest organic matter, leaving it odor free.

Lastly, some deodorizers are actually disinfectants that are in low enough concentration to escape EPA registration. Many malodors come from the biosoils on VOCs given off by bacterial action. The idea is, if you kill the bacteria, the odor goes away.

 Odor control is a complex subject. Picking the right approach for each situation can be difficult. If you find yourself frequently dealing with odor issues, I would recommend taking a science-based odor control class, such as ones approved by IICRC.
