From the Director of Membership & Communications

Well NOW I Know How You Feel

Three weeks ago, I had the pleasure of attending the annual meeting and convention for my association, The American Society of Association Executives (yes, there is, indeed, an association for everything). It was the first time I had attended the event, and was one of over 6000 attendees.

Over three days, I learned so much that I was having trouble processing everything, I feel badly for our Executive Director, Ernie Hartong, because I came back to the office and did, for lack of a better term, a brain dump. I had so many ideas and got so much out of the convention, that I didn't know where to start with implementation.

I have often hears ARCSI members say this exact thing to me at the Annual ARCSI Cleaning Convention. "This is all fantastic information," they'll tell me, "But how do I find the time and energy to implement all of this great stuff?"

To remedy this situation, ARCSI has engaged industry consultant Sharon Tinberg, of Rags to Riches, to spend Friday afternoon of Convention week helping you organize your thoughts and create an action plan. Sharon, a communications expert, will help you focus, choose your favorite ideas and create a plan to begin energizing your business the minute you return home.

Boy, I wish I had had Sharon and her brilliant session upon my return from my convention. Perhaps I would not still, three weeks later, be sifting through notes and organizing sticky notes to myself.

Another fantastic benefit of attending my convention was something less tangible. I made contacts with other association executives - those in marketing and communications, especially - who deal with some of the same tough issues I deal with every day. It was absolutely thrilling to discuss problems, get some fresh perspectives and come home with real, tangible solutions that I would have never thought of on my own.

I now have a group of people who know the ins and outs of my "business" who I can call on if I am just stuck on how to solve a problem or need a new idea.  I am part of their collective. They know they can call me for the same reasons. It is a exhilarating feeling to realize one is not "alone in the trenches."

I have watched these same interactions take place at the ARCSI Cleaning Convention year after year. I am so proud to serve this organization, where members sincerely want to see their peers succeed and, at events like the Cleaning Convention, Executive Leadership Conference and Regional Meetings, members are constantly making steps toward helping one another be the best cleaning service owners they can be.

Having been to my own association's convention, I finally know how ARCSI members feel when returning from an Annual Cleaning Convention. I can't recommend the experience highly enough.

Hope to see you in Chicago!

The Department of Labor (DoL) will continue to pursue coordinated efforts to combat misclassification of workers and make employers see "the full effect" of the laws they are breaking, DOL's Solicitor M. Patricia Smith told the annual meeting of The American Bar Association recently.

Small business owners should ensure they are following the letter of the law when determining if they will classify workers as employees or independent contractors.

The general rule that determines whether someone is an employee or an independent contractor is that an individual is an independent contractor if they decide how the work will be done. Independent contractors aren't told by the company what to do and how to do it. What is important is the end result and how it's reached is up to the contractor.

Independent contractors typically set their own hours and are paid on a freelance basis, either a flat rate or per job rate. Independent contractors are responsible for paying their own taxes to the IRS and to their state tax department. Independent contractors are not entitled to benefits, even those mandated by law like unemployment and worker's compensation, because they are not employees of a company.

If you're not using the GenEon Trio all-purpose cleaner, your surfaces are not getting "GenEon Clean." That means you are leaving a chemical residue behind on everything you clean. When you clean with GenEon your surfaces are dirt, grime, and residue-free. While the ARCSI Facebook page is accessible and the LinkedIn Group is active, many members have a desire to connect and share information only with other ARCSI members. We are please to once again offer that option in the form of ARCSI Groups!

Here you'll find specific resources for each stage of business, hot topic calls on interesting topics and, most importantly, other ARCSI members to chat with.

Joining a Group is free and easy!
  1. Go to hrrp://
  2. Click on the "Member Resources" drop down menu.
  3. Click "Groups"
  4. Choose the Group or Groups you'd like to join!

In addition to local area networks, set up so those in the same geographic region can chat, there are also many topic-related Groups:

  • "Your Business" deals with operational issues like employees, marketing, quality control and technical cleaning information.
  • "Stages of Growth" allows you to share information with other ARCSI members that are at the same revenue level as your business.
  • "Special Interest Groups" include green cleaning, family business and legislative affairs, though other topics can be added if the desire is there.
  • "Volunteers and Committees" offers a place for our many devoted, active members to share committee information and keep informed.
  • "Membership Levels" is where Bronze members can connect with other Bronze members, Silver with Silver and Gold with Gold.

We hope to take advantage of the ARCSI Groups. Click here to go to the Groups page. You must sign in as an ARCSI member to have access to this valuable members-only section of the website.
