Daron Pres I want to send a shout out to all of the recent San Francisco area Regional Meeting attendee's earlier this month. Kresin and I were honored to be in attendance and enjoyed reacquainting with colleagues that we hadn't seen for a while and meeting some great people that we met for the first time. Thank you all for investing your time to share the day together to learn & network and we look forward to meeting again sometime soon.

The ARCSI 2012 Cleaning Convention is right around the corner, only a couple of weeks away. Will you be there? I certainly hope so! We have some great educational sessions and some great presenters on the schedule again this year. I, as well as you I am sure, always come back home energized and with ideas that will benefit myself, my employees, my clients, and my business in general. It truly is an investment in our businesses.

I would like to send out a challenge to you. The fall is the time of year that I always review / revise my next year's business plan and goals. My challenge to you is for you to review and revise your plan and if you don't have one yet that you make it a priority and get it done. When your 2013 goals are set, if you would like send me an email with your goals for the coming year. It will be interesting to see where our members are heading and how we as an association might be able to help through the educational programs that we can develop.

Better Life Maids has been selected as ARCSI's 2012 New Cleaning Company of the Year. This award is sponsored by Rags to Riches and is presented to one company each year at the ARCSI Cleaning Convention.


The award winning company is chosen based on extensive application and vetting process that includes such things as branding, customer service, customer satisfaction, financial health, data measurement, systems and processes, employee selection and retention.

The award is presented to the best new company under five years old that meets the standards of the application process, and is selected by a panel of judges. All of the judges have founded independent cleaning services with annual revenues exceeding $1.2 million and are extremely successful business owners by any industry measure.

Sharon has provided her expertise to hundreds of companies including Better Life Maids.

tired maid Every company has employee issues. Even if you don't yet have employees, you need to know the laws on discrimination and at will employment for when you do begin to hire.

Employment law expert attorney Greg Hare will be on hand at the 2012 ARCSI Cleaning Convention to answer all of your questions. Greg was such a huge hit at the 2012 Executive Leadership Conference that members requested ARCSI bring him back on a bigger stage. Greg will address employee law concerns on Saturday, Oct. 20 during a general session at the Hard Rock Hotel.

To be sure he covers what you want to know, Greg has asked that you send in your employee questions before the Convention. Please send your questions to Chris Zimmer at, who will forward them on and make sure they are addressed and answered at the Convention.
ARCSI Board member Dee Strickland will host the free ARCSI 101 Webinar on Wednesday, October 3 at 7:30 pm EDT/4:30 pm PDT. This is a chance for new members and non-members to ask the question they really want answered: What will ARCSI do for ME?

Strickland will co-host the Webinar with 2012 ARCSI Cleaning Convention Chair Jeff Lange of McMaid in Chicago and Co-Chair Angela Wilson, of Solano Maids of Suisun City, CA.

This free webinar is open to both ARCSI members and non-members and we promise you'll take away a new perspective on how ARCSI can help your cleaning business after this 45-minute event.

October is National Women's Small Business Month. Women-owned businesses are one of the fastest growing segments of the small business community. Today, about 30 percent of small businesses are owned by women, compared to about 5 percent in 1970.

This month the SBA officials will host a series of weekly web chats, aimed at helping aspiring and established women business owners learn more about starting or expanding small businesses, gaining access to capital, and government contracting set-asides for women. In addition, tips on business opportunities for young women will also be discussed during the last webinar in the series.

The digital age has been upon us for some time and this year, ISSA and ARCSI are getting on board with two different apps for the 2012 Cleaning Convention/Interclean.

ISSA has developed their ISSA 2012 Interclean app that will allow you to view the full convention schedule, including ARCSI education courses and evening networking events and has some very cool features like an interactive map of the show floor. The app can actually map your route from one vendor to the next, saving you precious time and energy. You can also make a personalized agenda or itinerary for the convention through the app. You can dowload the app through Google Play or the iTunes store. You WILL need your badge number in order to log in. These will be available at the ARCSI office starting October 8.

Once you're at the Convention, join in the fun by downloading SVNGR and going on a Cleaning Convention Scavenger Hunt. Post your favorite tips of the day, answer questions and post pics of you and your friends taking part in the 2012 ARCSI Cleaning Convention. Those who complete the most tasks have a chance for a few excellent prizes. You can download the SVNGR program at Google Play or iTunes. Once you are at McCormick Place or the Hard Rock Hotel, your hunt will begin!
Even if you don't watch football, you have by now heard about the controversial call that was responsible for this week's Seattle Seahawks' victory over the Green Bay Packers and what was likely the reason that the NFL referee lock out ended 48 hours later.

While the NFL's referees were on strike, they were replaced by high school and college officials who have less experience and are used to slightly (but significantly) different rules. It was an unmitigated disaster to be sure, but there are a few things to be learned from this experiment.

The first is: Experience Counts. There is no substitute for competent, efficient people doing the jobs they were properly rained to do. While the NFL officials may miss a call here and there, they are specially trained, knowledgeable and the best officials for the job with which they are tasked.

Your people are your assets. When you lose a key member of your staff, it will take lots of time and training to get them to the level you need them to be at. Value your experienced employees; they take more time and money to replace and they could hurt your reputation when the leave.

The second is: Doing what's right for your brand is so much more important than doing what's easy. The NFL felt that the officials' demands were outrageous, but not negotiating a deal with them put the entire league in turmoil and caused loyal fans headaches. There is no doubt that fans viewed the NFL differently after several armature mistakes by the replacement refs and that they were livid with the league after Monday's debacle.

The point is, don't cut corners and think people won't notice. You clients will notice and the last thing you want is YOUR loyal fans up in arms because you did what was easy instead of what was right. While this may be instinctual for owners, it is a required lesson for anyone representing your brand; cleaners, office staff and anyone in one of your company vehicles.

In the end, it took national outrage to get the NFL officials back on the field and the league back to normal. Don't let small issues turn into disasters in your business. Address problems immediately and you'll avoid headaches in the future.

  • "Stages of Growth" allows you to share information with other ARCSI members that are at the same revenue level as your business.
  • "Special Interest Groups" include green cleaning, family business and legislative affairs, though other topics can be added if the desire is there.
  • "Volunteers and Committees" offers a place for our many devoted, active members to share committee information and keep informed.
  • "Membership Levels" is where Bronze members can connect with other Bronze members, Silver with Silver and Gold with Gold.
