Your ARCSI board members were in Orlando the end of Januarymeeting for our annual Strategic Planning Session. We met and stayed at the Buena Vista Palace the same location as this year's Executive Leadership Conference coming up April 12-14, 2012. You are going to like this hotel with the beautiful grand meeting room and Downtown Disney just right across the street.

We look forward to sharing this venue with all of you and sending you home with tangible plans and ideas to begin implementing as soon as you return to your business. There is a great line up of speakers with great content and of course catching up with fellow colleagues and networking.

Speaking of networking have you thought about hosting a regional luncheon in your area? You don't have to feel overwhelmed, the regional meeting committee and our office staff partner with you to create the agenda and provide you with all necessary administration detail. At the ARCSI annual strategic planning session just a few weeks ago your Board of Directors and staff spent 2 ½ days locked in a room (well, not really) putting together the plan for 2012 and beyond. This Board of Directors deserves accolades for the dedication, passion, and vision that they brought to this meeting. It was a success and we came out with a great in depth plan to moving forward with. This Board truly wants this Association to continually improve and is committed to developing and delivering increased value to your membership.

As members of ARCSI this Board has your back and interests in mind. I encourage everyone to talk with the Board Members and give them your feedback and ideas for they are representing you. Together we can continually improve our individual ARCSI experiences as united members.

The 2012 ARCSI Cleaning Convention Committee is currently accepting topic ideas for the event, to be held October 16 - 19 in Chicago.

Past topics at the ARCSI Cleaning Convention have ranged from general business to technical cleaning issues  to finance. Topics can be for the general audience or targeted to residential cleaning companies within a certain revenue range.

Ellers will lead attendees through several diagnostic questions, to help narrow the focus, then present his sales planning matrix, to help attendees develop their plan.

This FREE ARCSI Webinar is a preview of the 2012 ARCSI Executive Leadership Conference presented by Ethos HR Online. Those who have already registered for the ELC should plan to attend this call, so that you can complete the pre-work required for Ellers' ELC session.

This year, the ELC Committee has added and element of competition to the roundtables. Attendees will be broken into groups to develop a sales plan. Attendees will present their plan to all ELC attendees on Saturday afternoon. This ARCSI Sale Survivor competition will allow attendees to leave the ELC with a sales plan they can begin to implement as soon as they arrive home while still giving members the networking experience they crave.

Why I Love the Executive Leadership Conference

Alison_NEWDon't get me wrong, I love convention too, butin a totally different way. ELC is quiet. It is calm and intimate and intense. It allows me to be focused on the great material rather than what time the bus will be running and how many booths I can get to in one or two days.

ELC gives me a chance to constantly network. Since everything happens in the same hotel, I can have breakfast with one group of people then sit with others and lunch with still other people. I always feel relaxed at ELC which is something I can't say for the convention.

Having our keynote speaker for a whole day gives us a chance to get the whole picture rather than a hurried 45 minute presentation. Joe Ellers, our main speaker is going to give us everything we need to know about sales. Not marketing, but sales. How to close the deal.

There will be a workshop Friday night which will be an enhancement to our regular round tables. Each of you will leave Orlando with a sales plan for your business, not a general sales plan, but one suited to your individual business.

I've just spent three days at the headquarters hotel and it it fabulous!!! There are two good restaurants on site but better yet, Boardwalk Disney is across the street and is only a quick stroll away. For those of you unfamiliar with Boardwalk Disney, it is free and is an area of shops and very good restaurants. The group I was with did dinner at a great Cuban restaurant owned by Gloria Estefan.

Last but certainly not least, Orlando in April is spectacular! Leave the winter doldrums at home and come to Orlando to join us for a wonderful event!

HCT ISEOn the ARCSI Hot Topic Tuesday call last week, one of ISE's favorite questions was "what do I have to do stay certified?"

Why do we love this question? Two reasons:

1. the question shows that you are thinking into the future, considering at least the implications for a continual investment in your staff but also the potential returns; and


2. the question shows that you are thinking about continuing education, considering the "what if the content changes" question and wondering if the class and test you took 3-4-5 years ago is still "good."

And in about two months, we expect to confirm the first class of Clean Trust-certified HCTs from the February inaugural class in Dallas/Ft. Worth, Texas. When these folks received their official notice of certification in the mail, they will also receive documents from The Clean Trust explaining the professional expectations of them as an HCT and how to keep it current and active.

Here's the skinny on how a Clean Trust-certified house cleaning technician can keep his/her certification up-to-date:

  1. remit an annual registration fee of $30.00
  2. complete 2 Continuing Education Credit (CEC) every four years

The Continuing Education Credit (CEC) program is designed to ensure that all certified technicians, instructors, and inspectors are continually seeking the most updated knowledge in their field of expertise; this may come in the form of scientific developments shared in a session at a conference, such as the Cleaning Industry Research Institute, or another class through The Clean Trust.

The easy part is that The Clean Trust maintains a list of approved CECs on their website (psst: you'll see the Modern Cleaning™ Cleaner, Safer, Greener™ Chemical Free Cleaning Training Program classes on that list for 2 credits each!). The hard part will be deciding when and where to invest your time so that the new knowledge or practice you gain benefits you and the company for whom you work in the best possible ways!

A great benefit of CECs to your company is that you gain credibility with clients and peers as an educated cleaning company...not just the owner but the certified technicians as well. Announce the various CEC accomplishments in the monthly newsletter to feature your technicians, make a press release out of it. Who knows? You might find yourself starting to present some educational programming sooner than you think!

Now, you might be wondering what happens if you miss your annual renewal date. The Clean Trust helps by sending a renewal notice on your anniversary date to remind you. But if you still miss your renewal, The Clean Trust may require you to repeat the class and examination to bring your certification back up to active status.

In short, the House Cleaning Technician certification is a certification for life...a life of continual education and professional development.

ECOMAIDS To Hold National Convention In Conjunction With ELC

ARCSI and ECOMAIDS officials announced today that ECOMAIDS will hold its Annual Convention for franchisees as part of the ARCSI Executive Leadership Conference April 11-15, 2012 in Orlando FL.

Derek Christian, owner of My Maid Service and ARCSI Membership Chair said, "As the residential cleaning industry's trade association, ARCSI works to represent and provide programming for our entire industry, independents and franchisee's alike. We are extremely pleased that ECOMAIDS has chosen to hold their National Convention for their franchisees in conjunction with the Annual ARCSI Executive Leadership Conference."

"We will be able to combine our world-class training session with ARCSI's excellent educational seminars to provide an incredible experience for our franchise partners," said Amanda Haggart, Vice President of Franchise Support. ECOMAIDS will hold private meetings for ECOMAIDS franchise partners on Thursday, April 11th. ARCSI members Chuck Terpstra of The Cleaning Pros and Donna Brown of Fiary DustServices were featured this month in the Angie's List regional publication for the Tampa/St. Pete area. Both companies are highly rated by Angie's List and Chuck and Donna provided home owners with tips on hiring a professinal cleaning company.

Recognition of ARCSI professional members like Chuck and Donna is growing across the country as consumers become more demanding and are asking more questions regarding background checks, insurance, etc.

The Small Business Administration recently published an article on its website to help small business oeners decide when they need to hire a lawyer and when they could deal with issues themselves. Here's what the SBA had to say.


Legal Issues You Can Handle on Your Own

1.Naming your business and claiming a trademark- The process of naming a business isn't as simple as just picking a name and running with it. If you choose any name other than your own, you'll need to file a "Doing Business As" Name.

You can also search for and claim a trademark on your own. Use the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office'strademark search toolto see if a similar name, or a variation of it, is trademarked. You can even claim a trademark yourself online.

2.Legal structure for your business- Entering into a partnership agreement or forming an LLC can be done without legal assistance - although it's wise to consult an attorney about the ramifications to your individual business. You can also use the services of an online broker such asLegalZoom,MyCorporation, orThe Company Corporation.

3.Filing and registering the paperwork to start a business- Most of the legal steps involved in starting a business can be handled without the help of a lawyer. This includes applying for the right licenses and permits, registering your business for tax purposes, and applying for an Employer Identification Number (EIN). T

4.Creating contracts and non-disclosure agreements (NDA)- Customer contracts, partner or vendor agreements, and NDAs can all be prepared without the assistance of a lawyer. ements

5.Creating buy-sell agreements- If you are in a business partnership or an LLC with multiple owners, you'll need a buy-sell agreement in place to protect you, in case a co-owner dies or wants to transfer ownership.

When it's Time to Retain a Lawyer

1.Forming a corporation- While you can often take care of the formation of a legal business entity such as an LLC or business partnership without legal help, forming a corporation with shareholders and a board is a more complex process. Articles of incorporation can be filed without lawyers, but the administrative side of managing the complex tax and legal requirements often requires the services of a corporate attorney.

2.Filing a Patent- Patents are expensive and time consuming. It can take years to get one approved. That's why so often see "patent pending" messaging in the marketplace. So unless you are in the pharmaceutical or biotech industries, consider whether patenting your product actually gives you a major market advantage. Consult a patent attorney to help you evaluate your product and understand what rights you will achieve.

3.Litigation- This can include dealing with lawsuits by current or former employees or customers, discrimination or harassment lawsuits, environmental lawsuits, government investigations for legal violations, etc.

4.Buying or Selling a Business- Lawyers can help with negotiating sales agreements, lease agreements, and more.
