From the President

I am counting down the days until my own personal favorite time of year: the ARCSI Executive Leadership Conference. For those of you who have never been to the ELC (or haven't been lately) it is totally different from the Fall convention. No buses because the education sessions all happen at the headquarters hotel. No decisions about which education session to attend because they happen one at a time. Not the same old speakers you have heard before, or the same subjects.

ARCSI focuses the ELC not on day to day operations of your business, but rather we take a step back to see the bigger picture like leadership (That's why we call it the Executive LEADERSHIP Conference.) and management. We hire (at no small expense) world class speakers to challenge you to be a better you at your business.

The ELC is intimate. There are about ΒΌ of the amount of ARCSI attendees as we see at the Fall convention and trade show. This means you can actually have a conversation with that person you've been meaning to get to know better. This is a total, immersion experience. ARCSI provides breakfast both days and lunch the first day. We will have just one speaker for all day on Friday: Mike Moore from MAP Consulting. I have heard one of his colleagues from MAP speak before and they put on a powerful program. If we get one complaint at the convention, it is that the time allotted to speakers is too short to really dig into a subject. That is NOT the case at the ELC. Day two begins with Cassie Hoag, also from MAP and continues with an HR expert, Don Phinn and to energize you and send you on your way, a noted motivational speaker, Maxine Shapiro.

The ELC is pricey at $599. It may not be for everyone, but it IS for people who are serious about meeting the challenges we face in the marketplace today. It IS for leaders who want to improve themselves and therefore their businesses. It IS for managers who know that learning is always PRICELESS!

Editors Note: Today's predicted high in San Diego is 76!

Boy, was I wrong! I was so impressed with the vast amount of information presented and its value to me as an owner." - Eugena Bring, Owner, Carnation Home Cleaning, Mesa, AZ

ELC to Focus on YOUR Challenges
For company owners who are tired of spending their days putting out fires, there is the 2014 ARCSI Leadership Conference.

On February 27, cleaning company owners from throughout the US and Canada will come together in San Diego to reignite their passion for their business. Nationally-recognized speakers will help each owner identify their leadership style and explain how to maximize the results of each style.

Tips for Finding a Great Mentor
Working with a mentor can be one of the most fulfilling experiences of your life. But finding a mentor - one with which you have chemistry and a great working relationship - can be tough. offers four tips for finding your next mentor in a recent article:

Cast a wide net. Consider all avenues when searching for a mentor. While professional networking and associations are obvious choices to explore, your perfect mentor might be found in a neighborhood group, at your coffee shop or on the tennis court. ARCSI has a number of seasoned members who love giving back to the association through mentoring and are always willing to take time to answer questions.

Refine your request. When you make your ask, be very clear about why you chose that person, what you're hoping to accomplish and how you think he or she can help you achieve it.

Define expectations. Once you've found your mentor, make sure you clearly outline and share the same goals and expectations. Also, discuss how often you'll connect and whether it will be in person, on the phone or online.

Reciprocate. Your mentor is putting valuable time and effort into the relationship, so do all you can to show your gratitude, whether it's assisting with a task, sharing a contact or helping out in some other way.

NYC moves to Require Paid Sick Leave
New York City is set to enact a law in April that requires businesses with at least 15 employees to offer paid sick days. Mayor Bill de Blasio wants to go even further and require it from businesses with at least five employees.

Some business owners are wary of the proposed regulation. Not only would they have to pay the worker who stayed home sick, but in some cases, they would be paying a second worker to cover the shift.

Think You're Providing a Complete Background Check? Think Again
Cleaning Business Today recently published an eye-opening article on background checks by Jeannette Pokorny, COO at EverNext HR. For those cleaning companies who think completing a criminal background check is enough to ensure a clean record, CBT offers "The Seven Essentials of a Background Check."

An employer should be looking for several things when they complete a background check:
1. Any illegal activity, charges or convictions.
2. Has the candidate been honest about their past.
3. Education verification.
4. Reference verification.
5. Employment history.

There are several different kinds of checks an employer can perform to gain this information. Pokorny offers examples of each as well as what can be gained from the search.
